Jet Cities sings music arranged in the barbershop style. With its close,
unaccompanied, four-part harmonies and ringing chords, barbershop is a uniquely American folk
art, and Jet Cities is proud of our "heritage". However, there
are many misconceptions about barbershop singing; for example, many years
ago people believed that barbershop harmony was best suited to mens voices.
Not so! Some of the best choral singing today is performed by
female barbershoppers. Besides, anything as colorful and fascinating in its costuming
and dramatic possibilities certainly has appeal for women!

Another misconception: barbershoppers
sit around the barber shop (of course!) and sing about their mothers and
Dixie and the "old Kentucky home". Au contraire!
Barbershop is just a STYLE of arranging music, not a required set of
themes or songs. Jet Cities' repertoire includes songs as diverse as
"Seasons of Love" from
the Broadway musical Rent, a jazzy version of "World
on a String", and
original ballads. In
fact, a cappella music like barbershop is one of today's hot
forms of entertainment; just take a listen to the The
Nylons, Manhattan Transfer and Take 4, to name a few
well-known recording artists. All
use the tight harmonies and memorable melodies associated with a
cappella singing.
Sweet
Adelines International, of which Jet Cities is a chapter, is a nonprofit
music education organization for women that embraces the
barbershop style. Founded in 1945, today the organization has more
than 30,000 members all over the world and a mission to advance the musical art form of
barbershop harmony through education and performance. The new International Champion
Quartet for 2007 is
SALT: four talented, young women from Sweden. Our 2007 International Champion Chorus is the
RichTones Chorus,
from the Dallas-Fort
Worth,
TX
area, and directed by Dale Syverson. These singers will hold their titles
until October, 2007, when, in
Calgary, ON, Canada, the 2008 international champions will be
chosen.
